Valery Plata Named Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State senior Valery Plata was named the Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week on Thursday afternoon.

This is the fifth career Golfer of the Week honor for Plata.

Plata, in her fifth year as a Spartan, finished in eighth place at the Landfall Tradition this past season in Wilmington, N.C. She fired a 5-under par 211 (70-70-71) and was the top finisher for the team. She finished the tournament with 12 birdies and 36 pars.

Plata finished the fall season with a team-best 72.46 scoring average, posting on top-10 finish and three top-10 results over five tournaments.

The 2020 Big Ten Player of the Year as a sophomore, Plata is a three-time First Team All-Big Ten selection. She enjoyed a tremendous summer, capping it off by finishing in a tie for second place during the first leg of LPGA Q School, posting a 275 (72-69-66-68) over four rounds. Plata also played in the AIG Women’s Open at historic Muirfield Golf Links in Scotland in August, the LPGA Amundi Evian Championship in France and was one of three MSU golfers to play in the World Amateur Team Championships in Paris.
