Birdies for Babies Program Closes Fall Season Raising 5K

DURHAM – The Duke men’s and women’s golf fall seasons have come to a close and the Blue Devils raised $5,120.75 for the Birdies for Babies program. Pledges continue to be accepted for the Birdies for Babies program, which benefits the Duke Children’s Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units.

Over the five years of the program, which was created by former women’s golf national champion Virginia Elena Carta, the Blue Devils have raised $94,459.95.

In the most recent tournament to close the fall, the two teams combined to collect 129 birdies and four eagles.  The Blue Devils registered 629 birdies and 16 eagles during the fall.

The two teams will be off until February when the women’s team will travel to the Bahamas for the Nexus College Invitational Feb. 13-15.  The men’s team will open the spring Feb. 26-28 at the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Dorado, Puerto Rico.

Those looking to support Duke’s partnership with Duke Children’s can make pledges per birdie.  Pledges will start at $0.50 and high pledge increments are welcome.  If the Blue Devils register an eagle (counts as two birdies), albatross (three birdies) and hole-in-one (four birdies) they will count as stated.

The creation of the program was spearheaded by Carta.  A native of Udine, Italy, Carta was a four-time All-ACC selection and the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion.  The 2016 WGCA All-America and Honda Award winner turned in an NCAA-record 16-under-par ledger of 272 as a rookie to register her first collegiate victory.  She became one of only four Blue Devils to win both a NCAA Individual and team NCAA title.
