Chip Shots: Mattison Frick Reflects on First Semester in Champaign

Hello Illini Nation!

My name is Mattison Frick, one of the three freshman on the team this year, and I am so excited to share with you my first semester experience at Illinois, what the team has been up to over winter break and what we are looking forward to in the upcoming spring season!

This last semester went by so fast! I feel like so much happened and I am honestly still processing. Coming to college was definitely a big adjustment, especially coming all the way from Arizona. It took a bit of getting used to. I am so glad to have had Coach Slone, Coach Pina and the rest of the girls to help and support me through both my highs and lows of the semester. Being on this team and being able to work with such amazing people have been an absolute dream come true. These girls are amazing and I feel like I really found a second family and home here in Champaign.

I think one of my favorite things from last semester was spending time with the team both on campus and on the road. I had the opportunity to really explore campus and learn new things about both the school and golf program almost every day. The team even had some time to go to football games and a few other sporting events to support our fellow student-athletes, which I believe to be very important. Traveling with the team, seeing and playing at new places across the country was a blast! I really enjoyed these experiences and I look forward to many more in the future.

After this last semester, I think everyone was excited for winter break and to go back home and see friends and family. Even though we all were pretty far apart, the team was able to connect a few times over break to catch up and check on one another. It was nice to hear about all the girls enjoying some time with family and rest and relaxation. We talked a lot about how we were working on our games, how each of us is preparing for the spring season and what our goals are moving forward. All very exciting things!

Speaking of the spring season, I cannot wait, and I know the rest of the team is excited too. We will kick the season off February 12 with the Therese Hession Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., and hope to see plenty of success there. The team has some pretty big goals this year that we are prepared to take head on. We have been working hard, both on and off the course,…
