TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Men’s Golf will host its 43rd annual Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate at Tucson Country Club, beginning on Monday, Jan. 30. The Wildcats are the five-time defending champions, including winning back-to-back individual championships as well. The 2022 edition of the tournament proved to be a thrilling affair as Arizona defeat New Mexico by one stroke with Christian Banke claiming the individual title for the Wildcats by a single stroke.
“Our entire program is eager to compete again after a strong fall schedule,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “Obviously we have some great history of late with this tournament, which builds on the excitement for the week. We have another great field of teams coming into town, and Tucson Country Club is an ideal setting for this event. Our team is looking forward to shooting some quality scores and getting a new year off to a great start.”
Arizona’s lineup for the week is headlined by upperclassmen Chaz Aurilia, Chase Sienkiewicz and Sam Sommerhauser. Newcomers freshman Zach Pollo and transfer Tiger Christensen will round out head coach Jim Anderson‘s lineup card.
The 2023 edition of the event is the first under the namesake of the Arizona Thunderbirds who contributed $1 million towards the Clement Golf Center, which is being constructed at TCC. It will also mark the second year the event has been played at the official home of Arizona Men’s and Women’s Golf.
The field this week in Tucson will include Iowa State, New Mexico, Saint Mary’s, SMU, Texas A&M and West Virginia among other programs. The 72-hole tournament will begin with two rounds on Monday before playing the final round on Tuesday morning.
Admission is free for fans and patrons to attend the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate at Tucson Country Club.
