East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team bounced back from a loss on Friday to beat Maryland, 4-1, in the Big Ten Match Play Championship.at Ocean Creek Golf Course in Palm Coast, Fla. on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans, seeded No. 2 in the nine-team field, opened the championship with a 3-1-1 loss on Friday in the semifinals before bouncing back to beat the Terrapins on Saturday afternoon.
Drew Hackett won 4&3, beating Maryland’ Will Celiberti in the matchup at the top spot. Hackett won the sixth and eighth holes (16 and 18) to take a lead of two, and then took holes 13 and 14 (4 and 6 on the course) before closing out the win.
Sophomore Ashton McCulloch bounced back from a loss on Friday to beat Ronnie Kim, 3&2. McCulloch won the third and fourth holes to take the early lead (14 and 15) and won the ninth (2) to extend his lead to three. After Kim cut the lead to two, McCulloch won the 16th hole (9) to seal the win.
Junior August Meekhof, who halved his match on Friday, posted a 5&4 win over Dillon Brown in the third spot. Meekhof won the sixth hole (18) and then won four of the next six holes to close out the win.
Senior Bradley Smithson, who posted a 4&2 win on Friday, continued his strong play with a 6&5 victory over Armand Papaziani. Smithson took a three-hole lead after four holes and then captured four-straight to seal his win on the 13th hole.
Sophomore Satchel Pierce suffered the lone loss of the day, falling to Constantin Mons, 5&4. Pierce trailed by just one after seven holes, but Mons won four of five holes to seal the win.
Michigan State is back in action on Monday, March 6, hosting the Colleton River Collegiate at the Dye Course in Bluffton, S.C.
