Kumar Earns Two Individual Wins as Men’s Golf Opens 2023 Spring Strong at the Big Ten Match Play


PALM CITY, FL — Rutgers men’s golf started their spring campaign strong at the Big Ten Match Play in Palm City, Fla., over the weekend. The Scarlet Knights played three rounds of golf, taking on Northwestern, Indiana, and Nebraska.
 
The Scarlet Knights were seeded No. 6 out of nine teams who took part in the weekend’s play.
 
Rutgers collected five individual victories throughout the two days of play. Junior Noah Kumar led the way with two individual wins. The Sarasota, Fla. native recorded a 1-up win over John Driscoll III of Northwestern and a 5-and-4 victory against Caleb Badura of Nebraska.
 
The Scarlet Knights dropped their rain-shortened opener to the Wildcats, 3-2. Senior captain Xavier Marcoux earned a 1-up victory against Northwestern’s James Imai in the match.
 
Rutgers’ match against Indiana ended in a tie, but the Hoosiers advanced on a tie-breaker. The Scarlet Knights earned two individual victories in the matchup.
 
Sellers recorded a 5-and-3 win over the Hoosier’s Noah Gillard, and Jones’ defeated Thomas Hursey by a score of 4-and-3.
 
In its third match, Rutgers fell to Nebraska, 4-1. Kumar was the only Scarlet Knight to earn an individual win against the Cornhuskers.
 
Freshman James Newton also took part in the weekend’s play for the Scarlet Knights.
 
Rutgers returns to action at the Dorado Beach Collegiate, hosted by UNCG in Dorado, Puerto Rico on February 26-28.
