The University of North Carolina men’s golf team, ranked No. 4 in the country by Golfstat, will play third-ranked Texas Tech in match play Friday at the Hapuna Beach Golf Club in Waimea, Hawai’i in place of the Amer Ari Invitational, which was canceled due to high winds.
The Tar Heels played seven or eight holes (depending on the player) in the first round on Wednesday before play was initially suspended and soon thereafter canceled. Today, the Carolina players were on holes three and four when conditions again became unplayable.
In lieu of the tournament, two ACC teams and two Big 12 teams, all ranked in the top 20, will compete Friday in an officially NCAA-sanctioned match play event, the ACC-Big 12 Showdown.
In addition to the UNC-Texas Tech match, No. 12 Georgia Tech will play No. 18 Texas, the defending NCAA champion.
Friday’s pairings include:
Ryan Burnett (UNC) vs. Calum Scott (TT)
Dylan Menante (UNC) vs. Baard Skogen (TT)
David Ford (UNC) vs. Ludvig Aberg (TT)
Kenan Poole (UNC) vs. Matthew Comegys (TT)
Peter Fountain (UNC) vs. Tyran Snyders (TT)
Nanu Mohan (UNC) vs. Jack Wall (TT)
The match will feature several of the top-ranked collegiate amateurs in the world. In the current World Amateur Golf Rankings, Aberg is the No. 1 player, while Ford and Menante are ranked No. 6 and 7, respectively.
Golfstat ranks the Red Raiders’ Scott and Aberg third and fourth, respectively, in collegiate golf while Ford is No. 15 and Burnett No. 24 for the Tar Heels.
The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Eastern.
