Wildcats Tee Off In Southern California

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. – Less than one week after competing in the Collegiate Invitational in Mexico, No. 15 Arizona Women’s Golf returns to action in the Therese Hession Regional Challenge in Southern California. The tournament is set up for 54 holes over three days at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, beginning with its first round on Super Bowl Sunday. The Wildcats posted a strong final round in their last event to finish in sixth place after Carolina Melgrati fired the second-lowest round of the tournament at 68.

“Obviously we finished our last tournament on a high note, which was important for our team,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “As we prepare for a tournament that we have a lot of experience with, I am eager to see our team come out and compete like we did on the final day in Guadalajara. We will take what we learned from last week and build a great gameplan for a course that we know very well.”

Formerly the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, Arizona has played in this event in nine of its last ten seasons at Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Wildcats have posted three finishes of fourth place or better at the event that was first held in 2013. Melgrati was Arizona’s top finisher in the event one year ago, finishing in a tie for 12th at 5-over par.

The 16-team field for the 2023 edition of the event features five Pac-12 programs as well as nine programs ranked in last week’s national GolfStat rankings. Arizona is one of six teams in the top 15 nationally participating in the tournament.

Arizona is paired with SMU, USC and UCLA for Sunday’s first round, beginning at 11:12 a.m. (MST) on the first hole.
