LIHU’E, Hawai’i – With play suspended in the second round due to darkness, the Texas A&M men’s golf team sits in fifth place at the John Burns Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,156 yard Ocean Course at Hokuala.
Originally slated to play just one round Thursday, the decision was made to start a second round with inclement weather approaching in the coming days. Play was suspended at 6:40 p.m. local time with golfers needing to play between seven and nine holes to complete the second of the three rounds.
Texas A&M stands at 11-under-par with all five golfers completing nine or 10 holes in the second round. BYU sits atop the standings at 23-under, one stroke ahead of Arizona (-22). New Mexico (-14) and UTEP (-12) are also in front of the Aggies.
Sam Bennett sits in 11th place, five strokes off the lead, at 6-under-par through nine holes in the second round. Jaime Montojo is tied for 19th at 4-under through 10 holes. Daniel Rodrigues is tied for 33rd place at 2-under through 10 holes. Phichaksn Maichon (+1) and Michael Heidelbaugh (+2) round out the Aggie fivesome at the midway point. Playing as an individual, Vishnu Sadagopan is tied for 39th at 1-under.
When the dust settled after round one, the Aggies found themselves in a hole, tied for 10th place at 2-under, 286, 13 strokes behind the leader BYU. Bennett and Montojo were tied for 18th place at 2-under, 70. Montojo eagled the two of his first three holes and was 6-under on his first nine holes. Bennett fired seven birdies in the opening round, including alternating pars and birdies on his first eight holes.
The remainder of the fivesome, including Heidelbaugh, Maichon and Rodrigues were tied for 57th at 1-over, 73.
Sadagopan was tied for 39th after one round, carding an even 72.
Action at the John Burns Intercollegiate continues with Friday’s resumption of the second round at 12:30 p.m. Central.
