LIHUE, HI – Senior Pono Yanagi led the Washington State men’s golf team as he finished the first round of play at the John Burns Invitational 1-under; 71. The Hilo, Hawai’i native concluded the first round in a tie for 31st out of 126 golfers.
Junior Jaden Cantafio posted even par; 72 after his first 18 holes of the spring season and sits inside the top-50 on the player leaderboard. Cantafio is tied for 41st heading into tomorrow’s second round.
As a team, Washington State ended the first round of the John Burns Invitational in a tie for 17th on the team leaderboard. The Cougars ended the opening round at 6-over; 294.
Brigham Young sits in first on the team leaderboard after they carded 15-under; 273 in round one. Long Beach State’s Ian Gilligan holds the top spot on the player leaderboard after he shot 11-under; 61 in the first round.
Due to the threat of inclement weather later this weekend, all teams continued onto the second round with the intention to finish the tournament a day earlier than expected. The Cougars played through 9 holes in the second round and will resume play Friday, February 16th. The third round will immediately follow the conclusion of the second round.
