LIHUE, Hawai’i – For a second consecutive year, No. 19 Arizona Men’s Golf finished runner-up at the historical John Burns Intercollegiate while carding a final score of 36-under par. Arizona shot 14-under as a team in the final round that was moved up due to incoming inclement weather. The Wildcats were led by sophomore Tiger Christensen who finished tied for sixth at 13-under after carding a final round score of 65, which was one stroke shy of his career low.
“I am pleased with how this week went for us,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “Any time you shoot 36-under par in a tournament impacted by weather, you have to be happy with how your team competed. Hats off to BYU on the win with a great week of golf, but I am extremely proud of our team. We executed our game plan, battled through adversity and played some of the best golf of the year. This week was a great opportunity for our team to grow and set ourselves for more success in the future.”
Arizona finished 18 strokes behind champion BYU who won the tournament with a top of the lineup of Cougars who finished 17-under, 14-under and 10-under. The Cats’ runner-up finish in Hawai’i also marked its second consecutive second-place finish in 2023.
In addition to Christensen’s top-10 finish, the Wildcats got a top-15 finish from freshman Zach Pollo at 9-under par. Pollo carded a 66 in the second round that pushed his team up the leaderboards. Senior Chase Sienkiewicz gave Arizona its third top-25 finish with a 7-under week that put him in a tie for 21st.
Originally scheduled for 54-holes over three days, the tournament was condensed into two days due to inclement weather in the forecast in Hawai’i on Saturday.
The Wildcats will return to action when it returns to the Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a fifth straight season.
