PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The PGA Tour’s designated events are attracting elite fields with $20 million purses. While some of the biggest names like Jon Rahm, who made his Tour-best 24th straight cut, and Max Homa are dialed in this week at the Genesis Invitational, not everybody brought their ‘A-game’ to Tinseltown.
Some big names were sent packing on Friday. That’s the beauty of having cuts in these invitationals. You still have to play at a very high level otherwise you might find yourself on the wrong side of the cutline. It was a long waiting game for Tiger Woods, who had to sweat it out until Saturday morning to book his weekend plans for Riviera Country Club. The cut was made at 1-over 142 and 68 players still have a legitimate chance to hoist the trophy on Sunday.
Here are some of the big names who weren’t so lucky.
The Englishman and reigning U.S. Open champ had finished T-30 and T-5 in his previous two starts here. But he’s leaving early after shooting 73-71, his second weekend off in his last three starts. Fitzpatrick struggled with his approach game on Thursday (-1.758, No. 113). His average approach shot improved by more than 12 feet on Friday, but he only made three birdies in 36 holes. That won’t cut it on the PGA Tour.
Spieth’s putter let him down big time. He lost more than three strokes to the field on the greens and ranked 115th for the first two days. After making a double bogey at 18 on Thursday, he headed straight to the putting green searching for answers. He putted better on Friday but still lost strokes to the field with his short stick. Spieth made three bogeys in his first six holes en route to his second missed cut in six starts this season – 74-70 – and his third time having the weekend off in 11 career starts in the tournament.
