Thorbjornsen and Ethan Ng each shot matching 5-under 30s on the front nine. Thorbjornsen had six birdies against one bogey on the front side, while Ng had five birdies and four pars. In fact, Thorbjornsen birdied eight of the first 12 holess on the day, and finished with a tournament-leading nine birdies on Monday. He capitalized on each of the course’s Par 5s, with a birdie on each of the three. Ng is tied for sixth in the field with six birdies after 18 holes.
As a team, the Cardinal leads the field in Par 4 scoring (-5) and birdies (24).
Karl Vilips (1-under 70) is tied for 14th with Ng, while Alex Yang’s even-par 71 has him tied for 27th.
Stanford’s second round will begin early Tuesday off the 10th hole, with the Cardinal going off at 6:45 a.m.
