Cougs Move Up Leaderboard Following Second Day at The Prestige


LA QUINTA, Calif. (February 21, 2023) – Sophomore Peter Jung and junior Preston Bebich each fired even-par 71 to pace Washington State Men’s Golf during the second round of play at The Prestige, Tuesday on the par 71, 7,100-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West. As a team, the Cougars improved six strokes from their opening round and finished with a three-over, 287, giving them a two-day total of 580, currently sitting 12th in the 24-team field, two places higher than where they began the day. Second-round play was suspended due to high winds with half the field on their back nine holes.
 
Sixteenth-ranked Pepperdine continues to lead after two rounds following a 6-under 278, four strokes ahead of No. 6 Stanford.
 
For the second-straight round, the Cougars came out quick, registering five birdies in the first three holes. Jung posted two birdies and a bogey on his front nine to make the turn at -1. A birdie on the par-4 3rd (his 12th hole of the day), took him to -2 before giving strokes back at the 6th and 9th to finish with an even-par 71 and a two-day score of 143, currently tied for 30th.
 
Bebich posted birdies on two of his first three holes and also made the turn at -1. After back-to-back bogeys on holes 2 and 3, he birdied the par-5 8th before a par on No. 9 to finish at even-par 71. For the tournament, Bebich is +5, 147, tied for 62nd overall.
 
Junior Jaden Cantafio completed his round with just one birdie but played fairly clean as he posted a two-over, 73. After an opening-round 71, Cantafio sits tied for 39th at 2-over, 144.
 
Senior Pono Yanagi collected four birdies on his round and finished his second 18 holes at 1-over, 72. Yanagi bettered his first-round score by three strokes and currently sits tied for 55th at 4-over, 146, heading into Wednesday. Freshman Sam Renner improved by five strokes over his first round as he finished Tuesday with a 3-over 74, which included two birdies and 12 pars. Renner enters Wednesday’s final round at 11-over, 153, tied for 101st.
 
Sophomore Franklin Lydra, playing as an individual, rebounded from a slow start to shoot 1-under on the back side to finish his round at 5-over, 77, matching his 18-hole score from Monday.
 
The second round will resume Wednesday morning followed by the third and final round at The Prestige.
