Maryland Women’s Golf Heads to Texas for ICON Invitational

HUMBLE, TEXAS – This weekend, the Maryland women’s golf team will travel to Houston, Texas, to play in the ICON Invitational at The Golf Club of Houston hosted by the University of Houston. This is the team’s sixth event of the 2022-23 campaign.

Over the two-day tournament (Feb. 27-28), Maryland will play the par-72 The Golf Club of Houston’s Tournament Course, designed by George Fazio. The tournament will consist of 54-holes of play (36-holes Monday and 18-holes Tuesday) beginning at 9:00 a.m. ET on both days in a shotgun format. The field will play from 6,392 yards.

No. 78th-ranked freshman Nicha Kanpai, senior Maria Vittoria Corbi, junior Patricie Mackova, ranked No. 60 nationally, sophomore Panassaya Somchit, and senior Angela Garvin will tee it up this week for the Terrapins.

“We have had a great couple weeks of preparation and are excited to get back on the road and compete,” head coach Kelly Hovland said. “We had a great start in Mexico and beat some of the best teams in the country, including No. 8 Ole Miss and No. 12  Virginia, which gives us some confidence heading into Houston.”

Participants in the invitational include host No. 37 Houston, No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 11 USC, No. 18 Oklahoma State, No. 27 Iowa State, No. 28 SMU, No. 29 Texas Tech, No. 35 Tulsa, No. 40 Tennessee, No. 43 NC State, No. 45 Maryland, No. 50 North Texas, Charlotte, Illinois, Texas State, and UTSA. Rankings are based on team standings via Golfstat as of February 22, 2023.

In 2022, USC (slated to join the Big Ten Conference in August 2024) won the event.  The Terrapins finished in a tie for 10th (with Michigan) of 15 teams with a team total of 872, at eight over par for the Tournament.

The venue is home to the Cadence Bank Houston Open on the PGA Tour, which takes place in November.

For the first time, the individual champion of the ICON Invitational will receive a playing spot in The Chevron Championship Official Pro-Am on April 18. The host sponsor, Chevron, is committed to providing access and opportunity for female collegiate golfers. The Chevron Championship, the first LPGA Tour Major of the season, will take place at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas, for the first time on April 20-23.
