HOUSTON – The Illinois women’s golf team opened the ICON Invitational in seventh place after carding a first round total of 286 (-2) and a second round 276 (-12), heading into Tuesday’s final round at the Golf Club of Houston. The Illini’s 12-under second round is the second-lowest team round in program history.
Isabel Sy shot a nine-under 63 in the second round, setting the new program record for lowest individual round. Crystal Wang was the previous record holder at eight-under, setting that mark at last year’s ICON Invitational.
Sy opened the day with a 68 (-4) before her record setting second round. The San Gabriel, Calif., native tallied nine birdies in her bogey-free round, including six on the back nine. She enters tomorrow’s third round in all alone in second place at 13-under, one stroke off of the tournament lead.
Wang recorded rounds of 72 (E) and 71 (-1), and is tied for 34th, while Siyan Chen shot consecutive rounds of 72 (E) and is tied for 39th.
Anna Ritter shot an opening round 75 (+3), but followed it up with a 70 (-2), a second round that featured six birdies. Ritter is currently tied for 47th . Mattie Frick is tied for 51st after rounds of 74 (+2) and 72 (E).
All five Illini shot even or under par in the second round, amassing a total of 23 birdies.
Texas A&M leads the tournament at 551 (-25), with Iowa State (-24) and Southern California (-22) rounding out the Top 3. Texas A&M’s Zoe Slaughter leads the field individually at 14-under (130).
Tuesday’s final round begins with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. CT.
