Cal Finishes Third At Rain-Shortened Causeway Invitational

Chang, Liu Finish As Runner-Ups

SACRAMENTO – The California women’s golf team ended the Causeway Invitational with a pair of runner-up individual finishes and a third-place team score after inclement weather stopped second-round play early Tuesday morning. The second and third rounds of the tournament were eventually canceled.

With just the first round officially counting, senior Tzu-Yi Chang and freshman Adora Liu’s identical scores of 1-under 71 were one stroke shy of the individual  lead, giving the two Golden Bears their highest finish of the season. Their second-place finishes, though only following 18 holes of play, are the best of their respective collegiate careers.

“Both Zi [Chang] and Adora just had a notable round in that weather on Monday,” Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “Getting two solid second-place finishes for the Bears was pretty cool.”

Tuesday was initially supposed to see all 13 teams in the field play holes 37 through 54. However, separate delays for rain and lightning caused Monday’s 36 scheduled holes to be cut nearly in half and the field of 75 golfers barely finished round one. The teams completed less than half of the second round on Tuesday before play was stopped for good.

With all 11 Bears on the roster competing alongside each other for the first time, Cal’s “blue team” finished four strokes shy of first-place Washington at 8-over 296 and saw its B lineup take sixth place at 14-over 302.

“I think playing with everybody and getting everyone some tournament rounds was a really positive experience,” McDaniel said. “It gave Adora an opportunity to show her stuff and she came out and did just that. Coming back from the delays, I was really proud of them for making a statement as they went back out in the afternoon and used their resilience.”

The Bears now look ahead to Meadow Club Invitational next Monday and Tuesday in Fairfax.
