GAINESVILLE, Fla. – No. 16 Arizona Women’s Golf will leave unusually wintery conditions of Southern Arizona for the Sunshine State this weekend as part of the field of the Vystar Credit Union Gators Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida. It marks the second consecutive season that the Wildcats have played a tournament in Florida after finishing fourth in the Florida State Match-Up event in Tallahassee a year ago.
“This will be a great opportunity for us to compete in a different format of golf,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “This event is 54 holes over two days instead of the usual three, so a 36-hole opening day will be a different type of challenge for our young ladies. We’ve had a great couple of weeks of practice, and I feel good about our preparation to play well in Florida this weekend.”
Coach Ianello’s lineup will feature senior Gile Bite Starkute alongside the sophomore tandem of Carolina Melgrati and Lilas Pinthier. A pair of freshman will round out the lineup as Julia Misemer and Maria Cabanillas will compete for the Wildcats. The tournament also marks Cabanillas’ first full tournament appearance after firing a 69 in the Match in the Desert at Superstition Mountain, which was a one-round warm-up event in January.
This weekend in Gainesville, Florida will also be the team’s last regular season tournament outside of the Pac-12 footprint with competition in Arizona and California remaining before NCAA postseason.
Arizona will look to earn its fourth finish in the top three at a tournament this season with its best showing coming as a runner-up at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Tennessee.
