Golden Bears Have Started Spring Slate With Two Top-Five Finishes

BERKELEY – The California men’s golf team will look to extend its strong start to the spring season next week at the Lampkin San Diego Classic. Competition gets underway at the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista with 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

The Golden Bears enter their third spring tournament with two top-five finishes under their belts since late January, most recently including a fourth-place effort at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii on Feb. 16-17. Sampson Zheng added to his eye-catching junior season by earning co-medalist honors at the Burns with an 18-under 198; he was named the Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Week for the effort, and his 54-hole score in relation to par set a program record and is tied for the third-lowest in conference history.

Monday’s 36 holes will begin at 7:30 a.m. PST and Tuesday’s final round will start at 8 a.m. PST. The Bears are grouped with BYU, San Francisco and UCLA in rounds 1-2.
