Men’s Golf Secures Fourth Place Finish at Colleton River Collegiate


BLUFTON, S.C. — Rutgers men’s golf earned a fourth place finish out of 12 teams at the Colleton River Collegiate hosted by Michigan State in Blufton, S.C. The Scarlet Knights’ finish marks their highest of the 2022-23 campaign.
 
RU ended the tournament with a final score of 839 (-25), totaling 277 (-11), 283 (-5), and 279 (-9) in the first, second, and third rounds, respectively.
 
The Scarlet Knights sat in 10th place with a score of 16-under par heading into the tournament’s final round. Rutgers used a strong finish to move up six spots on the leaderboard and earn fourth place in the event. The last time the team earned a top-four finish was at the Boilermaker Invitational last spring.
 
Rutgers was led by Rhett Sellers, who ended in a tie for sixth place. The junior had a strong start to the tournament, playing to a 65 (-7) in the first round. He earned scores of 73 (+1) and 69 (-3) in the second and third rounds.
 
Noah Kumar had another impressive outing, finishing the event in a tie for 20th place with his final score of 210 (-6). The junior scored 69 (-3), 71 (-1), 70 (-2) in the three rounds, playing to at least five-under par for the second event in a row.
 
Weston Jones tied Kumar, along with James Morgan of Memphis, for 20th place in the competition. The Sudbury, Mass. native played to a total of 210 (72, 70, 68), moving up 20 spots on the leaderboard after the final round to second the top-20 finish.
 
Xavier Marcoux and James Newton also finished under-par for RU. The duo ended in a four-way tie for 45th place, playing to a total of 215 (-1).
 
Rutgers was second in the contest with 63 total birdies, only one behind leader Kansas State. Sellers and Jones finished with 15 birdies apiece, tied for the team-high.
 
The tournament winner, Georgia Southern, finished with a total team score of 830 (-34). Individual winner, August Meekhof, finished with a total 205 (-11).
 
The Scarlet Knights head to Sea Island, Ga. for the Sea Island Shootout against Penn State and Minnesota on Friday, March 11. Rutgers is then set to host the Johnnie-O at Sea Island at the same location on March 13-14.
