Maryland Places Third at the Briar’s Creek Invitational

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – The No. 35-ranked Maryland women’s golf team went three strokes over par at the Briar’s Creek Invitational this week, finishing in 3rd place out of 16 teams. No. 43-ranked junior Patricie Mackova led the way for the squad, finishing in sixth in the field after posting a score of 212 (72-73-67), which was four under par. This marks her fifth top-10 finish of the 2022-23 season.

The Team

Freshman Nicha Kanpai, who is ranked 53rd nationally, posted a score of 217 (72-72-73), which was one over par to finish in a three-way tie for 15th.

Senior Angela Garvin posted 218 (72-72-77) (+2) in a five-way tie for 18th.

Senior Maria Vittoria Corbi finished in a four-way tie for 25th, posting 220 (71-70-78) (+4).

Sophomore Panassaya Somchit finished in a seven-way tie for 56th, posting 221 (72-76-79) (+11).

Junior Karla Elena Vázquez Setzer, who played as an individual, finished in a two-way tie for 51st, posting 225 (72-75-78), which was (+9) in her season debut. 

Over the two-day tournament (March 13-14), Maryland played the par-72 Rees Jones-designed Golf Club at Briar’s Creek. The tournament consisted of 54 holes of play in a shotgun format. The field played from 6,152 yards.

By The Numbers

3.07: Maryland co-led the field in par-3 scoring, with a stroke average of 3.07 which was (+4).

4.42: Patricie Mackova led the field in par-5 scoring, with a stroke average of 4.42 which was (-7)

184: The Terps led the field, making the most pars with 184.

1: Eagles Made – Patricie Mackova recorded an eagle on the par-5 444-yard 7th hole during the final round. 

3: Beat three ranked teams (No. 48 NC State, No. 42 Charleston, and No. 36 Nebraska)

5: Beat five Big Ten teams (Illinois, Penn State, Nebraska, Iowa, and Rutgers)
