Spartans Wrap Up Play at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot a 4-over par 284 in the final round and wrapped up play in the Johnnie-O at Sea Island, held at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga.

The Spartans posted their best round of the tournament on Tuesday and finished in 11th place among 13 teams with a three-round, 54-hole score of 869 (294-291-284).

Kansas State shot a 2-under par 278 in the final round and leapfrogged Ohio State to win the tournament at 1-under par 839. Ohio State and Cincinnati tied for second place at 6-over par 846, with UNC-Greensboro fourth at 8-over par 848 and Kansas rounded out the top-five teams at 10-over par 850.

Final Results

Senior Drew Hackett had the best round of the day for the Spartans, a 1-under par 69, and tied for 18th place at 3-over par 213 (72-72-69).

Senior Bradley Smithson finished in a tied for 29th place at 6-over par 216 (72-71-73), finishing the tournament with a 3-over par 73.

Sophomore Ashton McCulloch had his best round of the tournament, an even-par 70, and tied for 39th place at 8-over par 218 (76-72-70).

Junior August Meekhof tied for 55th place at 12-over par 222 (74-76-72), closing with a 2-over par 72, while fifth year Troy Taylor II shot a 3-over par 73 and finished in 74th place at 9-over par 229 (76-81-73).

Michigan State will take the rest of the month off before returning to play on Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4 at the RedHawk Invitational, being played on Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Wash.
