Kumar Leads Men’s Golf to Third Place in Shootout, Sixth Place Finish at Johnnie-O at Sea Island


SEA ISLAND, GA – Rutgers men’s golf earned a third placed finish at the Sea Island Shootout and sixth place out of 13 teams at the Johnnie-O Sea Island hosted by Rutgers in Sea Island, Ga.

Noah Kumar and Rhett Sellers led the team in scoring in the shootout. Kumar tied for second with a score of 67 (-5) and Sellers finished fourth with a score of 68 (-4).

Brendan Hasen also shot under par finishing seventh with a score of 70 (-2) and Luke Wells tied for 10th with even-par (72) (E).

The Scarlet Knights ended the shootout with a final score of 356 (-4), only four strokes behind shootout winners Minnesota and Penn State.

Johnnie-O at Sea Island

RU ended the tournament with a final score of 851 (+11), totaling 282 (+14), 286 (+18) and 283 (+15) in the first, second and third rounds.

Rutgers entered the second round tied for third with Ohio State and UNCG. The Scarlet Knights entered the final round in seventh place but finished strong to move up one spot to secure a sixth-place finish in the event.

RU was led by Kumar, who ended in a tie for fourth place. The junior had a strong start to the tournament, scoring two under par 68 (-2) in the first two rounds. In the final round, he scored 72 (+2).

Rhett Sellers finished the event with a tie in 25th place with a final score of 215 (+5). The junior scored 69 (-1), 76 (+6), 70 (E) in the three rounds. Weston Jones tied for 29th place, playing to a total of 215 (73, 71, 72).

Rutgers tied for second alongside UNCG in the contest with 38 birdies, only four behind leader Cincinatti. Sellers and Kumar combined for 20 birdies with 11 and 9, respectively.

The tournament winner, Kansas State, finished with a total score of 839 (-1). Individual winner Tim Tillmans, finished with a score of 198 (-12).

The Scarlet Knights will return to competition at the Tiger Collegiate Invitational in Columbia, MO on Monday, April 10.
