BOULDER — The University of Colorado women’s golf team heads to the desert this weekend to play in the PING/ASU Invitational, March 24-26, at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.
Colorado is one of 17 teams at the invitational which includes nine Pac-12 Conference foes. Three teams at the invitational are ranked in the top 10 in the nation and 11 are in the top 40.
Colorado’s lineup will feature freshman Morgan Miller and sophomores Lauren Gooding and Natalie Vo, the Buffaloes’ top three individuals in scoring average and the only three to play in every tournament this season. Graduate senior Haylin Harris will play in her fourth event of the season while senior Issy Simpson is set to make her spring debut.
The Papago Golf Course, which will also host the Pac-12 Championship next month, will play at 6,543 yards for this 54-hole event. It will be the longest course the Buffaloes have competed on this season.
“It’s pretty long compared to a lot of courses we’ve played,” Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. “Ball striking will be very important. There are some holes where you need to hit it at the right spot, or else you end up in the desert, or in trouble, and they have big undulating greens. So being able to hit the green in regulation, but also get it in the right area is very important.
“Lauren and Morgan are pretty long hitters. Natalie has really gained some distance especially with the addition of a new driver recently. So I think that will help.”
The PING/ASU Invitational will feature three rounds of 18-holes each, beginning with the first round on Friday, Mar. 24. The Buffaloes will pair with Washington State and New Mexico in the first round with that group teeing off from No. 10 at 9 a.m. MDT.
