PHOENIX, Ariz. – No. 15 Arizona Women’s Golf will return to action in its home state for the PING/ASU Invitational, beginning on Friday, March 24 at Papago Golf Club. The Wildcats will take on the field of Arizona State’s home tournament with a new-look lineup as sophomore Carolina Melgrati will miss the event as she prepares to participate in the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Arizona is one of seven Pac-12 teams competing in this weekend’s event.
“I am excited to watch our team play some great golf this weekend after a three-week break from tournaments,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “We will miss having Carolina in our lineup, but we know she will proudly represent our program and university at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. I feel good about the young ladies competing this weekend and this opportunity to showcase our program’s growth and development. This weekend will also be a great tune-up for the Pac-12 Championships, which will be held at the same course in three weeks.”
The pack of Wildcats teeing off this weekend in Phoenix will be led by senior Gile Bite Starkute who has amassed five top-10 finishes this season, including a fifth place showing in the team’s last event. Sophomore Lilas Pinthier will compete as well as Arizona’s top finisher in this tournament a year ago. Newcomers Sydney Bryan, Julia Misemer and Nena Wongthanavimok will round out Coach Ianello’s lineup.
Arizona has finished in the top three in three of their tournaments this season, which includes a runner-up finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Tennessee. This weekend marks the first of Arizona’s two remaining regular season tournaments before Pac-12 Championships begin on Monday, March 17 on Papago Golf Club.
