PHOENIX – Led by a 1-under score of 71 from junior Stefanie Deng, the Washington women’s golf team wrapped up the first day at the PING/ASU Invitational in 13th place.

Washington recorded a team score of 302, 14 over par. The tournament, at Papago Golf Club, continues with the second of three rounds on Saturday. UW golfers will begin teeing off at 8:45 a.m.

Deng, who opened her round on the 10th hole, carded three birdies and one bogey over her first six holes. After a bogey on No. 18 (her ninth), Deng made birdies on both No. 1 and 2, moving her to 3-under and, at the time, a tie for fourth place.

She had a double-bogey six on the sixth hole, but birdied No. 7 to finish 1-under, tying her with eight others for eight place.

“Tough conditions out there and teeing off last we got the brunt of it,” said UW head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We were a couple of decisions from being +5 or 6.

“We will bounce back and have a big day tomorrow,” she continued. “I’m super excited for Stef as she has been so close for quite awhile. Good to see it pay off for her.”

Junior Camille Boyd, who had two bogies and a double on her front nine, also charged after the turn, carding an eagle-3 on the first hole and a birdie on No. 3, moving her back to 1-over for the round.  After bogies on the 5th and 9th, Boyd finsihed with a 3-over 75, tying her for 39th

Kennedy Knox and Jamie Hsieh each carded 6-over 78s, tying them for 60th place, while Brittany Kwon  scored an 80.
