Maryland Places Fifth, Mackova With Top-10 Finish at the Clemson Invitational


SUNSET, S.C. – The No. 37-ranked Maryland women’s golf team posted even as a team at the Clemson Invitational this weekend, finishing in 5th place out of 16 teams. No. 66-ranked junior Patricie Mackova led the charge, finishing in a six-way tie for eighth after posting a score of 214 (77-66-71), two strokes under par. This marks her sixth top-10 finish of the 2022-23 season.

The Team

Senior Angela Garvin posted 217 (76-71-70), which was one over par to finish in solo 21st.

Freshman Nicha Kanpai, ranked 57th nationally, posted a score of 218 (72-75-71), which was two over par to finish in a five-way tie behind her teammate in 22nd.

Senior Maria Vittoria Corbi finished in a four-way tie for 37th, posting 221 (73-76-72) (+5).

Sophomore Panassaya Somchit finished in a four-way tie for 57th, posting 228 (76-71-81) (+12).

Over the three-day tournament (March 24-26), Maryland played the par-72 Jack Nicklaus-designed The Reserve at Lake Keowee. The tournament consisted of 54 holes of play in a shotgun format. The field played from 6,386 yards.

From the Coaches’ Eye – Hovland’s Analysis…

“I can’t say enough about this week’s performance,” head coach Kelly Hovland said. “The golf course presented a challenge we haven’t had yet this season, and they stepped up and played great golf. The depth of this team continues to improve as we used scores from everybody this week, as well as an impressive T-8 performance from Patricie. She was able to shake off a challenging first round to play outstanding for the final 36-holes.”

By The Numbers

21: Beat two higher-ranked teams by a combined 21 strokes. (No. 16. Vanderbilt and No.22 Oklahoma State) 

180: Made the most pars as a team in the field. (Corbi made 40.)

Up Next 

Maryland will be back in action to face off against several Big Ten Conference opponents in Columbus, Ohio, in just under three weeks at the Lady Buckeye Invitational April 15-16 at The Ohio State University Golf Club for its fifth stop of the spring season.
