SAN FRANCISCO – Brandon Robison played the best round of golf of his Utah career to this point and is tied for third place for the University of Utah men’s golf team after the first day of play at The Goodwin, which got underway on Thursday at TPC Harding Park.
“We played really well for 11 holes,” said head coach Garrett Clegg, “then poorly for a four-hole stretch before finishing well the last three holes. We had a lot more good than bad today, just unfortunately those four holes cost us quite a few spots on the leaderboard. Overall though, when the day ends, we will be somewhere near the middle of the field.”
Robison was razor sharp right out of the gate, birdieing the first hole, then replicating that feat on holes No. 3, 7 and 9, putting him 4-under on the front nine. He posted another birdie on the 10th, and, after a difficult three-hole stretch on the back nine, finished his day with one more birdie to card a 3-under 67 that puts him just one stroke out of first. This round topped Robison’s previous career-best as a Ute by four shots and matched the squad’s second-best score so far in 2022-23.
“Brandon played incredible golf for most of the day,” said Clegg. “As part of our tough stretch, he made three bogeys in a row on 13-15, but he had a great birdie to finish his round. It was by far the best round of golf he has played for us this year.”
Javier Barcos spent most of his day piling up pars, collecting eight on the front nine and entering the clubhouse with a team-high 12. He also used a pair of birdies on the 16th and 17th to offset two late bogeys and capped the first round with a 2-over 72 that has him tied for 59th.
Martín León put up three birdies on Thursday and shot a 4-under 74 to put him in a tie for 98th. One shot behind León is Braxton Watts, who is sharing 110th. Go Nakatsukasa is tied for 149th. As a team, the Utes are 8-over and in a deadlock with three other squads in 16th.
