Senior Ryggs Johnston led No. 4/5 Arizona State Men’s Golf with a 1-under 71 in the first round of the 2023 Calusa Cup, tying for seventh individually as the Sun Devils sit in fourth as a team.
Arizona State got to fourth in the 10-team field after one round at a 4-over 292 (71-72-73-76=292/+4) in day one of action in the sunshine state. Three of five Sun Devils are in the top 15.
Johnston shot an impressive 4-under 67 in the first round with four birdies and an eagle on 18. He 5-under par on his last seven holes Michael Mjaaseth finished with an even 72, finding the cup a birdie on three holes, including his first two. Josele Ballester made three birdies as well, finishing with a 1-over 73.
Johnston leads the field with a total of 4-under on par 5 holes, the team in second in that category. Johnston’s eagle was the one of two on the day for the 45 player field.
The Sun Devils are four shots out of third with two days to play. They will look to build upon day one with strong showings in the second round Tuesday. Pairings and tee times for Monday will be announced late Sunday night, with a non-shotgun start for the event. Live stats will be provided on Golfstat.com
