Deacs In Contention for Second Title of the Spring

NAPLES, Fla. – Behind an impressive round from freshman Andrew McLauchlan, the Wake Forest men’s golf team remains in contention for the Calusa Cup title.

The Demon Deacons, who are three strokes back of No. 3 North Carolina for the team lead, have been led by three players inside of the top five on the leaderboard led by McLauchlan. After an impressive opening round that had the freshman from Neptune Beach, Fla. sitting in a tie for seventh, McLauchlan battled through tough winds and playing conditions to record one of the most impressive rounds in the field.

McLauchlan was one of just six players in the field to be par or better Monday afternoon, turning in the Deacs best round of the day of 72 (E). He is one of just two players to be par or better in the first two rounds and goes into the final round in contention for his first individual title.

After hitting the turn at 1-over-par, he had key back-to-back on No. 14 and No. 15. McLauchlan goes into the final round in second and four strokes back of the individual lead at 1-under-par for the tournament.

One stroke behind McLaughlan is junior Michael Brennan who is tied for third at even par while sophomore Scotty Kennon is tied for fifth at 1-over-par.

In addition to being three strokes back of the lead, Wake Forest also holds a six-stroke advantage over No. 1 ranked Vanderbilt, an eight-stroke edge over No. 5 ranked Arizona State and a 14-stroke advantage over No. 2 Texas Tech.

The final round will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. The Demon Deacons will be paired with North Carolina and Vanderbilt.

From Coach Haas:

“This course is very unforgiving. It was very windy today. We could’ve had a really bad day, but the guys hung in there beautifully. We are right there. If we get off to a good start tomorrow and play the turn holes 9, 10, 11 and 12 well, we will have a chance at the end. Go Deacs!” – Head Coach Jerry Haas
