No. 5 Bulldogs Open SEC Championship Tied for Third


BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– The 5th-ranked Mississippi State women’s golf squad opened up the first round of the 2023 SEC Championship on Wednesday. After 18 holes, State is in a tie for third with No. 3 LSU shooting 292 (4-Over Par) as a team.

The Bulldogs held strong throughout the opening round of play from the Greystone Golf and Country Club behind the play of standout sophomore Julia Lopez Ramirez and the continued spring success of freshman Surapa Janthamunee. Heading into the turn, the Bulldogs sat tied for ninth before making a climb up the leaderboard in the final nine of the opening round. The Bulldogs are currently two strokes behind No. 21 Florida and four strokes behind No. 19 Vanderbilt who is currently in first.

Lopez Ramirez continues to shine within her sophomore year, carding yet another round in the 60s to open up the postseason. Lopez Ramirez sunk four birdies in the first to secure her 23rd career round in the 60s (3-Under, 69) to tie for second in the opening round. Lopez Ramirez is now only two rounds in the 60s behind all-time Bulldog great Ally McDonald Ewing for the most in program history.

Surapa Janthamunee had a fantastic showing in the opening round of the SEC Championship, carding four birdies throughout the round to secure her eighth round of par or better round in her freshman campaign so far. SJ carded 1-under par (71) in the opening round and is currently tied for ninth.

 

Senior Abbey Daniel tied for 36th in the opening round after carding 3-over par (75). Daniel carded the third most pars on the day, rolling in 14.

Senior Hannah Levi and Freshman Izzy Pellot round out the scorecard for the Bulldogs in Round One. Levi carded 77 while Pellot carded 81.

The Bulldogs will see tee times in Rounds Two and Three based on placement in the prior round. The Bulldog’s second-round tee time is set as they will tee off from Hole 1 at 8:00 AM CT.
