No. 33 Maryland Prepared for Big Ten Match-Up at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, OH – This weekend, the Maryland women’s golf team will travel to Columbus, Ohio, to play in the Lady Buckeye Invitational at The Ohio State University Golf Club: Scarlet Course. This is the team’s ninth event of the 2022-23 campaign.

Over the two-day tournament (April 15-16), Maryland will play the par-72 layout designed by the late Dr. Alister MacKenzie and restored by 18-major champion and OSU alum Jack Nicklaus. The tournament will consist of 54 holes of play (36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday) beginning at 8:30 a.m. on both days. Players will tee off in a shotgun format. The field will play from 6,319 yards.

The tournament format will differ just slightly from its usual setup “play five, count four” format; this week’s stroke play event will be “play six, count four” in preparation for the Big Ten Championship next week.

No. 35th-ranked junior Patricie Mackova, senior Angela Garvin, freshman Nicha Kanpai, ranked 69th nationally, senior Maria Vittoria Corbi, sophomore Panassaya Somchit, and junior Karla Elena Vázquez Setzer will tee it up this weekend for the Terrapins.

Maryland enters this weekend as the 33th-ranked team in the nation, with Mackova and Kanpai, respectively, sitting in 3rd and 7th in the Big Ten Conference.

Participants in the invitational include host and Big Ten foe Ohio State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Nebraska, Purdue, Penn State, Rutgers, and Wisconsin. Non-conference opponents include Kent State.

Rankings are based on team standings via Golfstat as of April 11th, 2023.

“The past few weeks have been great to catch up on school, rest and enjoy the beautiful Maryland spring, but we are ready to get back into a competitive mindset and keep the momentum going,” said head coach Kelly Hovland. “The Lady Buckeye (Invitational) is a great opportunity to play a great golf course against many of our Big Ten opponents, and we are looking forward to the challenge.”

Last season, the Terps finished 6th out of 10 teams overall. Mackova placed in a solo for 8th, Corbi in a tie for 20th, Vazquez Setzer in a tie for 25th, Garvin in a tie for 30th, and Somchit in a tie for 35th.
