Men's Golf Third At Thunderbird In Phoenix


Arizona State’s Preston Summerhays, the individual champion, made a birdie on the final hole to also give the Sun Devils the team title by a single stroke over Arizona Saturday at the Thunderbird Collegiate in Phoenix.
 
Fifth-ranked ASU finished 28 under par for the 54-hole tournament at the Papago Golf Course. Arizona was second at 27 under, No. 2-ranked North Carolina was third at 20 under, Oklahoma State was fourth at 17 under and SMU was fifth at -6.
 
Ryan Burnett and Dylan Menante shot 2-under 69s on Saturday to lead Tar Heels, whose 6-under 278 was the best team score of the final day.
 
David Ford (68-66-73) was Carolina’s low finisher with a tie for seventh at 6-under 207, despite a final-round 73.
 
Menante (70-70-69) tied for 12th at 4-under 209, Austin Greaser (69-71-70) tied for 17th at 3-under 210, Burnett (73-70-69) tied for 28th at 1-under 212 and Peter Fountain (70-75-70) tied for 41st at 2-over 215.
 
Summerhays shot 66-68-66 to win medalist honors by four strokes at 13-under 200. Three Arizona players – Chase Sienkiewicz, Zach Pollo and Sam Sommerhauser – tied for second at 9-under-par 204.
 
The Tar Heels return to action April 21 at the ACC Championship at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst.
