Borrelli In Fourth At Pac-12 Championships

Bears Tied For Sixth Place

PHOENIX – Graduate student Annika Borrelli shot under par for the second straight day and freshman Adora Liu came on strong in her first round of action at the Pac-12 Championships, putting the California women’s golf team in sixth place with a 5-over 581 team score through 36 holes.

“We’ve been playing in some really cold weather,” Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “To be able to come down here and play desert golf with warm weather and fast greens, it’s a really good challenge for this team and I thought they responded very well.”

CAL ON INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD

After an even front nine, Borrelli (71-70 – 141) birdied on four of the next six holes. She finished round two a stroke better than the day before, carding a 2-under 70 that moved her from 10th place individually into a tie for fourth and just two strokes out of second.

“Annika really had it going on the backside,” Nancy McDaniel said. “What happened today will keep her very hungry for tomorrow.”

Liu stepped into the lineup and contributed in a big way through her first 18 holes of the competition, shooting a 1-over 73 that was good for second on the team and tied for 23rd out of 55 golfers.

“That was a really notable performance,” said McDaniel. “Adora just hit the ball really well, played freely and looked like she was really enjoying herself out there. To have her shoot one-over in her first round back is just great.”

Freshman Olivia Lee (75-74 – 149) put forth a notable performance of her own, also improving on her score from the previous day. Lee shot 2-over par and heads into the final day tied in 36th place.

“Olivia’s just getting better with every round. Her short game is really starting to click,” McDaniel said. “She’s feeling in control around and on the green so I think she’s looking forward to more solid rounds.”

Arizona (-8) and USC (-8) are leading the 11-team field, three strokes ahead of Stanford. The sixth-place Golden Bears (+5) currently hold a two-shot lead over seventh-place Oregon State (+7). They will be back out on Papago Golf Course Wednesday morning with the same lineup and tee times from 7:30-8:10 a.m.

“The mindset is one shot at a time tomorrow,” McDaniel concluded. “One shot at a time and see how many putts we can get to drop is the goal. This is a good group of all six players really clicking together with a team-first mentality and I think…
