PINEHURST, N.C. – The Duke men’s golf team starts play at the 2023 ACC Championship on Friday morning at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C., seeking the program’s ninth league title.
Duke is one of only four teams in the ACC that have claimed the last 13 conference titles, with the Blue Devils winning in 2017 and 2013, Wake Forest in 2022, Clemson in 2021 and 2016 and Georgia Tech wining the other eight. The 2020 championship was not contested due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tournament is held on the club’s Dogwood Course, which is set to play at 7,301 yards and to a par of 72. Kelly Chinn is a member at the club and set the Dogwood Course record during the 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur.
Chinn is joined in Duke’s lineup by Luke Sample, William Love, Ian Siebers and Ethan Evans. Jimmy Zheng is the Blue Devils’ alternate. Duke is coming off team wins at both the Stitch Intercollegiate (April 11) and in a match play event against UNC Greensboro (April 16).
The tournament format consists of three rounds of stroke play spanning Friday and Saturday, followed by match play semifinals on Sunday and finals on Monday. The first 36 holes of stroke play are played on Friday, starting with tee times at 7:30 a.m., off holes No. 1 and 10, with continuous second-round play in the afternoon. The third round on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., off of holes No. 1 and 10. Both the semifinals and finals start at 9 a.m., with all matches starting on the first hole.
Duke is the No. 7 seed in this year’s tournament and begins play at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, starting on No. 10 and playing alongside No. 8 NC State and No. 9 Clemson. The Blue Devils are led by Sample, who has a current stroke average leader of 71.31, which ranks as 15th best in the league.
Spectators are allowed at the ACC Men’s Golf Championship, and it is not a ticketed event. Parking will be available just outside of the main gate, with a shuttle service to the clubhouse. The semifinals and finals of the ACC Men’s Golf Championship match play will be televised live on ACC Network Extra from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Ryan Burr (play-by-play) and Steve Scott (analyst) will provide the call.
