Nyfjäll Named Byron Nelson Award Finalist

EVANSTON, Illinois — David Nyfjäll has been named as one of five finalists for the 2023 Byron Nelson Award, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Thursday. The winner will be announced on May 10 at the AT&T Byron Nelson Luncheon at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.

The purpose of the Byron Nelson Award is to select annually the outstanding Division I, II, III, or NAIA scholar-athlete of the year. Candidates must be graduating seniors, and the selection committee considered equally a nominee’s entire collegiate academic and golf career as well as their character and integrity while in college. Particular consideration is given to good citizenship, as portrayed by Mr. Byron Nelson over the course of his life and golf career.

Nyfjäll is joined as a finalist by Anton Albers (Little Rock), Beck Burnette (Lee), Palmer Jackson (Notre Dame), and Matthew Reidel (Vanderbilt). He graduates in June with a bachelor’s degree in Statistics and minors in Business Institutions, Psychology, and Data Science. The 3.776 GPA student from Uppsala, Sweden has been involved with Northwestern’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) since he stepped foot in Evanston, volunteering his time for canned food drives and to benefit the university’s Dance Marathon. Through Northwestern Golf, Nyfjäll has been a Team Impact role model to Luke Rowen since August 2020, a connection that has soared with each meeting. Team Impact is an organization that matches kids with special needs or chronic illnesses with collegiate sports teams across America.

On the course, Nyfjäll has collected three First-Team All-Big Ten honors, the 2022 Big Ten Individual Championship, and the 2019 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Award among other accolades.

Wildcats alumnus Ryan Lumsden was honored as the 2019 winner of the award, Northwestern’s first honoree.
