Surratt Takes Sole Possession of Individual Lead; Hall Posts Historic Second Round at SEC Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Freshman Caleb Surratt gained sole possession of the individual lead while redshirt junior Jake Hall carded the lowest round of any golfer in the field during Thursday’s round two at the SEC Championship at Sea Island Golf Club.

As a team, Tennessee notched the second-best round two in the field with a 4-under to climb four spots up the 14-team leaderboard. The Vols are currently tied for fourth place with in-state foe Vanderbilt.

After Friday’s final round of stroke play, the top eight teams in the field will continue onto to the match play portion of the tournament, which begins on Saturday.

Following up his 6-under outing during round one, Surratt posted a 2-under 68 on Thursday, improving to 8-under through 36 holes and obtaining sole possession of the individual lead. Surratt holds a one-stroke lead over Alabama’s Canon Claycomb entering Friday.

Sitting at 8-under 132 through two rounds, Surratt is now tied for the fourth-best 36-hole total score in SEC Championship history. The Indian Trail, North Carolina, native is seeking to become the fifth SEC individual champion in program history and first since VFL David Skinns in 2005.

In addition to Surratt’s continued stellar play, Hall burst onto the scene Thursday with a historic 6-under 64 that included eight birdies—ascending 40 spots up the leaderboard to move into a tie for 22nd place at 1-under overall.

Hall’s 6-under round is tied for the third-lowest in SEC Championship history, and comes just one day after Surratt accomplished the same feat in round one. VFL Tyler Johnson also shot a 6-under at the event last year.

Giving the Vols their third and fourth counting rounds of the day were Bryce Lewis and Josh Hill who shot a pair of 2-over 72s on Thursday to move to 3-over for the tournament. The duo currently sits tied for 44th place.

Laurent Desmarchais shot 73 during the second round and is 5-over and tied for 54th place going into the final round of stroke play.
