Gamecocks Conclude Trip to Sea Island for SECs – University of South Carolina Athletics

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – South Carolina wrapped up play at the 2023 SEC Championship on Friday. The Gamecocks shot 301 (+21) in the final round and finished 14th at 48-over for the tournament.

Sophomore Nathan Franks led the way again in Friday’s third round of stroke play with a 3-over 73. He was even through 10 holes but was hurt by three consecutive bogeys at holes two through four. Franks made birdie at the par-4 ninth hole to finish his round on a high note.

Fifth-year senior Evans Lewis, who concluded his career as a Gamecock today, shot 74 (+2) with a pair of birdies. Junior Rafe Reynolds also shot 74 (+2) with a pair of red numbers. Freshman Zach Adams was the final counting score with a 10-over 80. Sophomore Gene Zeigler was subbed in for transfer Lansdon Robbins today and he also shot 80.

No. 13 Tennessee was one of just two teams to post a red number on Friday as the Vols shot the round of the day with an 8-under 272. They jumped three spots up the leaderboard and will be the top seed for match play. UT’s Caleb Surratt was the individual medalist by six shots, posting his second 64 (-6) of the tournament today. He shot 196 (-14) and tied Gamecock All-American Matt NeSmith for the second-lowest 54-hole total in SEC Championship history. NeSmith was medalist in 2015 at Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course.
