East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State men’s golf team shot 28-over par 596 through two rounds and is tied for sixth place among nine teams at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate, being played at Atkins Golf Club on the campus of the University of Illinois.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament, being played on the par-71, 7,538 yard course, concludes on Sunday.
Host Illinois shot a 3-over par 571 and leads the field by 18 shots over second-place Loyola Marymount (21-over par 589). Ball State is in third place (24-over par 592), with Northwestern in fourth place (25-over par 593) and Nebraska rounds out the top-five teams (26-over par 594).
The Spartans are tied for sixth place at 28-over par 596 (300-296) with Indiana.
Sophomore Ashton McCulloch and junior August Meekhof are tied for 13th place with scores of 6-over par 148. McCulloch opened with an even-par 71 (71-77), while Meekhof had the best team round in the afternoon with an even-par 71 (77-71).
Senior Drew Hackett is tied for 23rd place at 8-over par 150, posting back-to-back rounds of 4-over par 75, respectively.
Fifth year Troy Taylor II is tied for 26th place at 9-over 151 (78-73), carding the second-best team score in the second round. Senior Bradley Smithson is tied for 45th place at 15-over par 157 (77-80).
The Spartans have three players competing as individuals, with sophomore Tommy Sullivan tied for 30th place at 11-over 153 (78-75).
Senior Pierce Morrissey is tied for 42nd place at 2-over par 154 (81-75), and classmate Parker Jamieson is tied for 61st place at 19-over par 161 (77-84).
The Spartans tee off on Sunday at 9:48 a.m., playing alongside Eastern Michigan and Michigan.
