East Lansing, Mich. – Senior Drew Hackett fired a 3-under par 68 in the final round and Michigan State’s men’s golf team finished in third place among nine teams at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate, held at Atkins Golf Club on the campus of the University of Illinois.
The Spartans had entered the final round in sixth place but had their best round of the tournament on Sunday with a 5-over par 289 and finished in third place at 33-over par 885 (300-296-289).
Illinois won the tournament at 2-under par 850, 26 shots ahead of runner-up Northwestern (24-over par 876). Michigan State placed third, with Loyola Marymount in fourth place (35-over par 887) and Ball State rounded out the top-five teams (37-over par 889).
Senior Drew Hackett tied for ninth place overall at 5-over par 218 (75-75-68). His round of 3-under par 68 on Sunday included four birdies and 13 pars.
Fifth year Troy Taylor II had his best round of the tournament on Sunday with an even-par 71 and finished in 18th place at 9-over par 222 (78-73-71).
Junior August Meekhof (77-71-77) and sophomore Ashton McCulloch (71-77-77) tied for 23rd place at 12-over par 225. Both players posted rounds of 6-over par 77 on Sunday.
Senior Bradley Smithson shot a 2-over par 73 in the final round on Sunday and tied for 40th place at 17-over par 230 (77-80-73).
Playing as an individual, senior Pierce Morrissey shot a 3-over par 74 in the final round and tied for 40th place at 17-over par 230 (81-75-74).
Sophomore Tommy Sullivan tied for 45th place with an 18-over par 231 (78-75-78) and senior Parker Jamieson tied for 60th place at 25-over par 238 (77-84-77).
Michigan State plays in the Big Ten Championships next weekend at Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. from Friday, April 28 to Sunday, April 30.
