Purdue Falters Late on Day One of Big Ten Championships

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Purdue men’s golf team got off to a strong start but faltered amidst brutal weather conditions over the last six holes to sit in 12th place at the Big Ten Championships held at Galloway National Golf Club, located on the outskirts of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The Boilermakers totaled a 32-over par 316 to finish round one in 12th place, but find themselves just 10 shots out of fifth place. With more difficult weather expected to arrive in both Saturday’s second round and Sunday’s final round, the Boilermakers can make a big move with a strong, final 36 holes.

Purdue found itself just off the lead midway through its round, despite teeing off an hour after the first wave. However, at about 2 p.m., as the initial teams were finishing up from the first wave, a heavy rain that was accompanied by 35-miles per hour wind gusts wreaked havoc on the teams remaining on the course.

As a team, Purdue’s group was 8-over as a squad through 11 holes. Purdue’s five players would then play the final seven holes in 28-over par. The Boilermakers’ playing partners, Indiana and Michigan State, played the same holes in 27-over and 27-over par, respectively.

The teams that finished first through fifth in the first round were all the teams that teed off first in Friday’s action.

The course showed its teeth on Friday, as the 70 golfers in the field compiled a 78.49 stroke average on the par-71 layout with four holes (Nos. 4, 13, 17 and 18) yielding no birdies. In addition, 12 of the 18 holes registered five or fewer birdies all day. Two holes, Nos. 13 and 18, played more than a stroke over par.

Leading Purdue was Nick Dentino, who is tied for 13th at 4-over par 75. Dentino was 1-under par through 12 holes, but bogeyed five of his last six holes to finish with a 75.

Kent Hsaio is tied for 28th at 7-over par 78. Hsiao was 2-over par through 12 holes, but also bogeyed four of the last five holes.

Herman Sekne is tied for 47th at 9-over par 80, while Peyton Snoeberger and Nels Surtani were tied for 56th at 12-over par 83.

Purdue will tee off round two at 11:25 a.m. ET, off hole No. 10, while being paired with Michigan and…
