STANFORD, Calif. – Javier Barcos posted the second-highest finish ever by a Ute at the Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championships while the University of Utah men’s golf team finished the tournament in 11th as the final day of play took place on Sunday at the Stanford Golf Course.
“Javier was outstanding today,” said head coach Garrett Clegg. “I believe that’s our second-best individual performance since we have been in the Pac-12. I’m excited to find out where Javi is sent to regionals. We will know on Wednesday.”
For Barcos, this goes down as his fourth top 10 finish of his junior year and it also marks the fourth consecutive time the Utes have had at least one player finished in the top 10 at the Pac-12 Championships. Barcos’ fourth-place showing is only surpassed by the second-place performance put together by Kyler Dunkle in 2019.
The junior from Estella, Spain got off to a solid start, beginning on hole No. 10 and recording five consecutive pars before posting a birdie on the par-4 15th. Barcos would finish the back nine at even and added two more birdies on the front nine before reaching the clubhouse with a 1-over 71. Over the course of the three-day event, Barcos was 8-under and that score was good enough to earn him fourth place, ahead of 11 players rated among the top 100 in the nation.
Go Nakatsukasa finished with Utah’s second-highest score with a mark of 6-over and he would leave Stanford in possession of 42nd place. Hunter Howe started strong with a score of even-par on the back-nine before finishing 8-over for the day and ending the tournament in 53rd.
Braxton Watts finished with a 72-hole score of 12-over and a share of 57th, while Brandon Robison placed 63rd and Jesper von Reedtz tied for 66th. As a team, the Utes were 32-over to take 11th.
“I’m majorly disappointed in how we played today as a team,” said Clegg. “It was not the way we wanted to finish our season after such a great day yesterday, but it is how we have been this year. We have a lot of growth that needs to take place. We will push forward to improve, evaluate things, and move forward.”
