Carolina freshman Megan Streicher’s 4-under-par 68 equaled the fourth-lowest round by a Tar Heel in an NCAA regional to highlight the opening 18 holes at the NCAA Pullman Regional Monday at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.

Streicher, playing in the No. 1 spot in the UNC lineup, made three birdies, only one bogey and eagled the par-5 17th hole to shoot 68, her fourth round in the 60s this season. The Cape Town, South Africa resident is tied for ninth place with 36 holes to play.

Freshman Inez Ng, playing in her first tournament this spring, shot even-par 72 and is tied for 30th.

The Tar Heels are tied for 10th in the 12-team regional after an opening round 3-over 291. Stanford, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, leads at 21 under par. Southern California is second at 16 under, Texas Tech is third at 11 under and Baylor and Sacramento State are tied for fourth at 5 under.

The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championship after Wednesday’s third round.

Houston is one shot back of the top five with ACC champion Clemson seventh at 3 under.

Streicher’s 68 ties the fourth-best by a Tar Heel in 28 NCAA regionals and is the lowest in a regional since Jackie Chang’s 68 in 2013.

Rose Zhang of Stanford, the top-ranked amateur in the world, and her Cardinal teammate, Sadie Englemann share the individual lead with a pair of 8-under 64s.

UNC’s Crista Izuzquiza opened with a 75, Natalia Aseguinolaza shot 76 and Kayla Smith had a 79.
