WESTFIELD, Ind. — With a pair of 70s (-2) from senior Hailey Borja and junior Monet Chun and a career-low 71 (-1) from freshman Sydney Sung, the University of Michigan women’s golf team posted an opening 283 (-5) today (Monday, May 8) to position itself third after 18 holes of the NCAA Westfield Regional at the Club at Chatham Hills.

Opening their third straight NCAA regional, the eighth-seeded Wolverines were paired with Tennessee and Oregon State for the first round. Starting off No. 1, the Maize and Blue got off to a strong start as the five-starters tallied 10 birdies to finish the front side at eight-under par. With four Wolverines under par at the turn, Chun and senior Mikaela Schulz paced the Wolverines with three birdies apiece.

After holding the regional lead through 11 holes, the Wolverines found some snags during the middle portion of the backside as they dropped out of the top of the standings. However, a birdie by Chun and an eagle by Sung on the par 5, 17th, helped U-M maintain a third-place spot closing with a 283 (-5) total.

With a team-best five birdies, Chun posted her ninth sub-par round of the season with her opening 70 (-2). Borja used three birdies of her own to post a 70 (-2) of her own — her 10th sub-par tally of the season. The duo is among the top 10…
