Men's Golf selected to play in the inaugural National Golf Invitational

MARICOPA, Ariz.  (May 12, 2023) – The Washington State men’s golf team will be participating in its second postseason tournament in program history, as the Cougars were selected to play in the inaugural National Golf Invitational. The tournament, which is presented in partnership with Golfweek, will take place May 18-21 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona.

The 2023 Men’s National Golf Invitational will feature 13 college teams competing in a 54-hole stroke-play tournament May 18-21 with the winner receiving an exemption into the 2023 Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona this September. Teams set to play in the Men’s National Golf Invitational along with the Cougars will be Arkansas State, Stetson, Santa Clara, Wyoming, Troy, Oral Roberts, Texas State, Penn State, Ball State, Valparaiso, Utah Valley, and George Washington.

“We’re all excited to play more golf in May,” said WSU Men’s Golf Head Coach Dustin White. “The guys earned the opportunity to keep competing and continue their good play. It’s been a lot of fun having everyone together working before we head out this coming week. Tons of energy. Southern Dunes is a great layout and I feel like our guys are ready to play.”

In May 2022, the NCAA announced it would allow schools to play in one season-ending event, similar to college basketball’s NIT. By July 2022, the inaugural National Golf Invitational was created in a partnership between Golfweek and Ak-Chin Southern Dunes with Golfweek’s Lance Ringler serving as the Invitational’s tournament director. A committee determined the invitation-only field using both the Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat rankings, while also considering teams who had strong regular seasons.

By receiving a bid into the 2023 Men’s National Golf Invitational, Washington State will play in a postseason tournament as a team for just the second time in program history. The last time the Cougars played as a team in a postseason event came during the 2001-02 season when WSU qualified for the 2002 NCAA West Regional. WSU Men’s Golf Head Coach Dustin White will have been a part of both postseason tournaments for the Cougars, having played in the 2002 NCAA West Regional as a player.
