Biondi Leads Gators, Seven Back of Championship Cut


BATH, Mich. – Fred Biondi led the Florida men’s golf team in day two of the NCAA Bath Regional with a bogey-free 3-under round on Tuesday. 

Florida finished even on the day with a 284 and is tied for sixth with Kansas State at 4-under. The Gators will enter the final round tomorrow seven shots back of the top-5 cut to advance to the National Championship at Grayhawk (May 26-31). The rest of the leaderboard features Georgia (-28), Illinois (-18), Oregon (-15), Texas (-12) and Michigan State (-11). 

Over his last 36 holes, Biondi only has one bogey to his name, which came on his ninth hole in round one. He has posted par or better through 27 straight holes at Eagle Eye Golf Club. He has shot both rounds in the 60s (69-68), tied for his team-leading 23 rounds of par or better. The senior mad three birdies today with two crucial ones on 14 (par-5, 560) and 18 (par-5, 589) to help keep Florida in reach of a top-5 spot tomorrow. He is 5-under overall and tied for 6th.

If the Gators fail to advance tomorrow, Biondi is in spot to make nationals as an individual. The top individual on a non-advancing team earns a spot at Grayhawk. 

After a double-bogey on five, Yuxin Lin (T37) battled back to even par on the day with a 71 behind big birdie on 18. Ricky Castillo also had a round fo 71 (E) to remain 2-under overall and tied for 21st.  

The final counting round came from Matthew Kress (T51) with a 74 (+3). A stroke back of him is John DuBois at T56. 

The Gators tee off tomorrow at 9:25 a.m. and are paired with Little Rock (+1) and Liberty (+5).
