Washington Finishes 6th At NCAA Auburn Regional

AUBURN, Ala. — Following three rounds of competition at the NCAA Auburn Regional, Washington finished in 6^th place, posting a collective score of 16-over 880. The Huskies made their best effort to unseat one of the prevailing top-five teams, but fell just short of advancing to the NCAA Championships.
 
“Finishing sixth at this event is always one of the worst feelings of the year,” said UW coach Alan Murray.
 
Washington shot 290 as a team Wednesday, good for 2-over par and their best showing of the three rounds at Auburn University Club. The Huskies finished six strokes behind Colorado State, the team who secured the fifth qualifying spot that affords a berth at the NCAA Championships.
 
“We played a good round, but no one ahead of us played poorly enough for us to make enough of a move,” said Murray. “Colorado State had a pretty good cushion.”
 
Nearby lightning suspended play during round three for about two hours. The delay was instituted just before 2:00 p.m. CT, and was lifted at 4:00 p.m. CT. Several teams had already turned in their scores at the onset of the postponement, but most of the players had to wait to resume competition.
 
Teddy Lin claimed the highest finish for Washington, shooting 1-over 217 and tying for 13^th while also pushing for an individual selection for the NCAA Championships for much of day three. The highest-placing player who is not a member of any of the five advancing teams is chosen from the individual leaderboard to attend the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Lin finished fourth among golfers eligible for this honor.
 
“Teddy had a good week,” said Murray. “He really performed well.”
 
Petr Hruby and Bo Peng shot 4-over 220 and tied for 19^th overall. Peng played at 1-under today and channeled his best golf in the back nine of the final round, delivering three birdies to keep the Huskies’ chances alive until the end.
 
Joshua Koo finished the tournament tied for 47^th and improved 12 spots from yesterday’s standings. Koo landed three birdies in a row on holes 6-8 Wednesday and ended 12-over 228 at the NCAA Auburn Regional. Taehoon Song concluded the event 15-over 231.
