Catherine Park Leads USC In NCAA Championships First Round

Freshman Catherine Park fired a 1-under 71 in her nationals debut while sophomore Amari Avery carded a par 72 to lead No. 9 USC in the NCAA Championships first round at Grayhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Trojans combined for an 8-over 296 and are tied for 20th in the 30-team championship.

The goals are clear for USC moving through the week in Scottsdale, first needing to make the 15-team cut after 54 holes and then looking to be in the top 8 after 72 to secure a spot in the eight-team championship match play bracket.

Park is tied for 21st after 18 holes. She opened with birdies on 10 and 11 before turning at 1-under. Birdies on 3 and 4 moved her to 3-under before bogeys on 5 and 6 left her at 1-under on the day.

Avery was also 3-under at one point during her first round. She turned at 2-under and reached 3-under with a birdie on 10, but finished her final five holes at 3-over.

For Avery, it marked her team-best 18th round of par or better while Park’s round was her 15th round of par or better and ninth under par,.

Sophomore Xin (Cindy) Kou is tied for 68th at 2-over 74, her round featuring a birdie on 2.

Junior Brianna Navarrosa is tied for 143rd (7-over) while senior Malia Nam is tied for 154th (13-over).

USC begins the second round Saturday at 7:05 a.m. PT.
