Nittany Lions Sit Second After Opening Round of National Golf Invitational

MARICOPA, Ariz. – The Penn State men’s golf team sits second in a tight team race as the opening round of the inaugural National Golf Invitational concluded Friday at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
 
The Nittany Lions shot a 7-under, 281, in the opening round of the postseason tournament. Penn State is just one stroke out of first place, with Wyoming leading the field at 8-under, 280. The Nittany Lions have a two-stroke lead on the third-place team, Washington State (5-under, 283).
 
Senior Patrick Sheehan and junior James Allen lead Penn State as the Nittany Lion duo is tied for eighth after shooting a pair of 3-under, 69s, in Friday’s opening round. Sheehan carded four-straight birdies beginning on the 13th hole to put together a stellar back nine and climb into the top 10. Allen recorded a bogey-free round in his impressive opening day effort.
 
Freshman Billy Pabst Jr. is tied for 18th after carding a 1-under, 71. Senior Jimmy Meyers follows closely behind in a tie for 27th after shooting an even 72.
 
Freshman Morgan Lofland sits 64th following an 8-over, 80.
