USC got match-play wins from junior Brianna Navarrosa, sophomore Xin (Cindy) Kou and freshman Catherine Park to defeat South Carolina 3-1-1 in the 2023 NCAA Championships quarterfinals Tuesday (May 23) at Grayhawk G.C. to advance to the national semifinals against Stanford.
In USC’s first NCAA match play appearance since 2019, the Trojans posted their first NCAA match play win since 2018 and will now try to advance to the match play finals on Wednesday for the first time.
USC, a three-time NCAA champion, earned the program’s sixth NCAA match play appearance Monday and kept it rolling with a come-from-behind win over the Gamecocks.
South Carolina held slim leads in three matches during the first nine, but the Trojans began to even matches early on the second nine.
Park won her match 3&2 while Kou claimed hers at 2&1, both matches ending close to each other while South Carolina golfers missed putts to extend their matches.
That gave USC a 2-1 lead after Malia Nam fell 6&5 in the first match.
Attention then turned to junior Brianna Navarrosa and sophomore Amari Avery, who were both leading their matches by two strokes.
Navarrosa got the honors, halving 8, the 17th hole overall, for a 2&1 clinching win.
The victory is USC’s fourth NCAA match play win in program history, improving its record to 4-5.
USC will face defending NCAA champion Stanford starting at 1:35 p.m. PT.
